Consider the Loch Affric Circuit for a moderate-to-easy four hour walk, the Carn Eige and Mam Sodhail Hike which is challenging and at ten hours is for the fit and knowledgeable. Sections of boulders have then to be crossed before descending down to the next bealach, Alternatively if strong winds ar blowing from the west, stay sheltered by contouring on grassy ground (pathless) around the eastern side of Carn na Con Dhu and meeting up with the next bealach. The views from this Munro are fine, however Sgurr nan Ceathreamhnan, the turning point on the route, appears a very long way away ! On a fairly obvious path, head west-north-west over boulderfield to a tiny lochan. A forestry track heads west, walk along this through the regenerating forest for 2.5km to a junction. It lies on the edge of Knoydart in an area known as the Rough Bounds of Knoydart. Drop to Bealach Beag, then climb the steep ascent on a good path up to Beinn Fhionnlaidh's shoulder. This is a #nofilter beauty from one of my forest walks near Fort Augustus. Below this minor top the ground becomes quite steep and covered in deep heather with hidden holes to catch tired ankles ! The ridge walk itself is grassy for some sections giving fast walking but there are also some steep rocky ascents and descents and a little very mild scrambling. A huge cairn is built on the top - this was the first trangulation point used by the OS in Scotland - it now makes a fine shelter in which to get out of the wind. They're typically done from Glen Affric in the south, but a more ambitious amphibious approach down Loch Mullardoch gives access to perhaps the most logical long circuit on these hills, a six-Munro horseshoe around Gleann a' Choilich that also includes the stunning multi-ridged peak of Sgurr nan … Don't climb up this, instead aim west-north-west down very steep, loose, grassy terrain to the ground just below Loch Coire nan Dearcag. The mountain is accessed by hillwalkers via the 3–4 hour Black Road Route, but is also summited as part of the longer 5–6 hour Circuit of Glencushnabinnia, and the at least 10–hour east-to-west crossing of the entire range, called the Galtee Crossing, which is climbed annually in the Galtee Challenge. Strong winds can funnel through here ! There are some sharp drops on the eastern side of this hill, therefore careful navigation in mist might be needed to find the path down. Head south on a distinct path to grassy ground on a wide bealach, There are two options from here : if weather is fine then stick to the crest, which narrows as it climbs and the path starts to climb to gain the wide plateau of Carn na Con Dhu. From Alltbeithe, head north on a good path following the Allt na Faing. It is in a very wild and remote position and many walkers will need an overnight trip to climb it, whether from Deeside or Speyside. More enjoyable is the scramble to Sgurr nan Ceathreamhnan's western top, from where aim south and pick up some fenceposts, then continue over Beinn an t-Socaich back to the hostel (see green line on map below). The summit is a fine place to stop and take in the views, particularly towards Lurg Mhor and Loch Monar, and there's a decent cairn to shelter out of the wind. Alternatively, you could choose to walk along the northern shore of the loch, however I can't recommend this as the path deteriorates into a wet mucky mess that constantly climbs and drops, sapping your strength. A stalker's path crosses the bealach, and ahead another very obvious path heads uphill. Site best viewed with screen area of 1024 by 768 pixels. Reach a narrow bealach before the minor summit with the spot height of 1040m, which can be by-passed. From the bealach, hike uphill on the path, occasionally zig-zagging on the ridge to gain the crest. The stalker's path aiming down to Bealach Toll Easa starts directly downhill, then zig-zags along the north side of the crest. The dam can't be crossed and the ground immediately below it is unforgiving, so stick to the road to return - one last short climb back uphill to your car ! I retraced my path to Stob a' Choire Dhomhain and shortly afterwards descended south into Gleann nam Fiadh. The coire headwall seemed infeasible due to steep rocks and steep snow fields. I continued down Gleann nan Fiadh and eventually picked up the path/track. This path is not good, being very boggy. On reaching Allt Toll Easa I rejoined my outward route and followed it back to the car. It rained on and off going down the glen, but not heavy.
